MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — One person remains in critical condition following Saturday night’s mass shooting on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, Police Chief Amy Prock said Wednesday afternoon during a news conference where she appeared alongside Mayor Brenda Bethune.
Eighteen-year-old Jerrius Davis of Bennettsville died in the officer-involved shooting that also left 10 other people with injuries. The investigation has been turned over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, which authorities said is standard protocol.
During the news conference, Prock said 10 people between the ages of 13 and 43 sustained injuries that were life-threatening after being shot, but later issued a clarification.
“There were 11 injured as a result of gunfire, but that doesn’t mean 11 people were shot,” Prock said. The injuries varied, as some were injured either by shrapnel or grazed with a bullet.”
“The Myrtle Beach Police Department is committed to the safety of our community, our visitors and those who work here, as it always has been. Random acts of violence do not deter us from protecting our community,” Prock said.
Prock and Bethune hosted the rare joint news conference to address lingering questions from Saturday night’s violence.
“Because this was an officer-involved shooting, SLED is responsible for this entire investigation, and that is why we have been so limited about what we can share,” Bethune said. “Just like you, we all want answers, and we will give you those answers.”
News13 made separate FOIA requests on Sunday for the Myrtle Beach Police Department’s incident report and the 911 calls about the shooting. Three Myrtle Beach police officers are on paid administrative leave.
SLED on Tuesday said Davis was “armed” and “shooting into a crowd,” and was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother, Jaeishala Fox, disputes that claim.
This is a developing story.
