WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. – The West Melbourne Police Department announced a heartbreaking update: A 14-year-old boy has died days after being critically injured in a hit-and-run.
Hunter Russey was taken off life support Saturday night, police said. Kavan Vishnubhai Patel, who is accused in the case, was rearrested on a second-degree murder charge.
According to police, Patel chased Russey in his vehicle after an alleged burglary at Patel’s business. He is accused of striking the teenager before leaving the scene.
At Patel’s first court hearing, he faced charges of aggravated battery and leaving the scene of a crash. The judge described the allegations as disturbing.
“The fact that the alleged victim is a juvenile, that’s something,” the judge said in court.

Following Russey’s death, Patel now faces an upgraded charge of second-degree murder.
Police said Russey’s family has chosen to donate his organs, allowing him to help others.
Patel remains in the Brevard County Jail without bond.
