GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Xavier Deontray Quarterman, 18, was moved to the Alachua County Jail yesterday and charged with battery on a detainee in a detention facility after allegedly throwing a punch that led to a fight with over 30 people in the Juvenile Detention Center.
At about 8 a.m. yesterday, Quarterman and the victim, both detainees at the Juvenile Detention Facility, were arguing because the victim was reportedly trying to “aggravate” Quarterman. Quarterman then allegedly punched the victim in the face, which led to over 30 people engaging in a fight.
The fight was reportedly captured on video cameras, and a detention deputy was reportedly just a few feet away when Quarterman allegedly punched the victim.
Post Miranda, Quarterman reportedly said that the victim and his friends kept antagonizing him, and although he repeatedly told them to leave him alone and stop talking to him, they would not stop, so he “got really mad” and punched the victim.
Quarterman has a juvenile criminal history starting in 2019. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $10,000.
