The Augusta Lynx are set to return in 2027. This time, Augusta’s hockey team will embrace its original name while sporting a refreshed logo.
Back in 1997, before hockey made its debut in Augusta, there were numerous suggestions for what the team should be called. Join us as we revisit this classic episode of ‘Out There Somewhere with George Eskola’.

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Known as the Raleigh IceCaps now, this team will undergo a transformation upon their arrival in Augusta.
“Considering the rich history of this city and its surroundings, there are several potential names. However, you’ll be astonished when we launch the ‘name the team’ contest—the creativity of the kids is truly impressive.”
Augusta is famous for floods, and long ago floods were called ‘freshets’. The Augusta Freshets…kind of French Canadian. Maybe too French Canadian. What do you think?
“That sounds more like a girls name.”
Well, give me a better idea.
“Killer whales, polar bears.”
“The Fliers.”
“The Peach State.”
The Peach States?
“Yeah, that’s good. I like that.”
They win a game, I’ll be surprised.
“The Augusta Hockey Pucks. That’s the best I could come up with.”
“Man-Eating Snowbirds.”
The team actually has an idea…
“Nationals. We thought about that, but we’ve looked through the history of the area here, and there’s several names it can be, you know, can be called here. Nationals is one.”
The team wants The Augusta Nationals.
“No!”
“Augusta’s Finest.”
