2 killed, 1 missing in Fremont train crash

FREMONT, Ohio (WJW) – Two people were killed and at least one person is missing after multiple pedestrians were struck by a train Sunday evening in Fremont, authorities said. Emergency crews are now at the scene.

Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez confirmed two fatalities.

According to the Fremont Police Department, the crash happened near the Miles Newton Bridge in Fremont, which goes over the Sandusky River at Hayes Avenue.

The Fremont, Ohio Police Department posted to Facebook Sunday evening around 8:25 p.m., saying, “Emergency crews are working on a pedestrian vs. train accident near the Miles Newton Bridge.  Stay clear, State Street is open, Miles Newton bridge is closed.”

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office did confirm to FOX 8 News that their dive team was requested to assist in the incident at around 8:30 p.m.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are on the scene. FOX 8 News crews are at the scene now getting more information.
