OAKLAND, Fla. (WFLA) — It’s a mystery that has captured the attention of a Central Florida town.

Residents in Oakland say the town’s beloved peacocks are disappearing, with a startling number of them being found dead.

Mo Jacobson has become well known in the community for her efforts to protect the birds, even earning the nickname “the peacock lady.” But within the past few weeks, Jacobson told NBC affiliate WESH several of the birds have started mysteriously dying.

Neighbors have reported finding at least 30 of the colorful birds dead, mostly on Deer Island. A Facebook post Jacobson shared shows the dead peacocks lined up on the grass.

Since then, Jacobson said many concerned peacock lovers have reached out to her.

“When I first learned about this… I think it was the end of January… I was told there was a total of 12. That was shocking to me. But then to find out a week later that there was a total of 30… that was terrifying,” she told WESH.

Jacobson explained that peacocks are not prone to disease, making their deaths potentially more disturbing.

A complaint has been filed with the Florida Department of Agriculture, and Jacobson said she plans to keep pressing for answers.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office also told WESH they’re aware of the situation. As of Wednesday, it was still unclear why so many of the birds have been dying.

The FWC’s website states that while peacocks are not native to Florida, they are protected. However, they can be removed.
