4 things to know about Daytona super speedway racing

DAYTONA, Fla. (WFLA) — The first thing you need to know about the Daytona International Speedway and the Coke Zero Sugar 400 for this weekend is that Hurricane Erin will not be a factor for the drivers or the race.

This is hurricane season in Florida, but thankfully, that powerful storm has passed us by.

Instead, the chaos on the track will come from the drivers themselves on this super speedway, that is sometimes loved and sometimes loathed, by the drivers.

When NASCAR lines up at Daytona, you never know what you’ll get. Exciting bumper-to-bumper racing can sometimes lead to big wrecks.

The second thing you need to know about Daytona is that not every driver is a fan when it comes to that calamity.

“At the end of the day, I will hate superspeedway racing,” AJ Allmendinger said. “I always will, but you know, with a couple laps to go, if there’s opportunity to win, I’ll be the first guy to be crazy out there and go do whatever it takes to win the race.”

Joey Logano admitted it’s fun to watch and be a part of.

“People trying to get in the playoffs or whatever their positions are, so it will be interesting watching it, seeing the teamwork and what people do,” Logano said. “They couldn’t pick the better race until you have the final race of the season, I believe.

The third thing you need to know about Daytona is not every driver has a specific game plan on how to deal with the calamity and crashes.

“I don’t have much of a thought process on speedway races in general,” Chase Elliott said. “I think that they’re really hard to plan. They’re really hard to predict for.”

But the fourth thing you need to know is this is Daytona, and any win here is prestigious for drivers and teams.

Points leader William Byron plans to take whatever is given to him.

“I feel like it’s an instinct place,” Byron said. You just have to make good decisions based on what’s happening around you, and I feel like we’ve been doing that the last few times there.”

If you’re looking for a driver to follow at Daytona, William Byron is not a bad pick. He’s had two wins this season and nine top-five finishes. He’s also had three wins at the Daytona International Speedway, including back-to-back victories at the Daytona 500.

Of course, anything can happen when that green flag drops.
