DAVENPORT, Fla. (WFLA) — A 4-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital Friday after Davenport police said he found a hidden handgun in his parents’ garage and accidentally shot himself.

The Davenport Police Department said officers received reports regarding a 4-year-old child who had been taken to Advent Health Heart of Florida with a gunshot wound around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21.

Investigators determined that the child was at his Davenport home with his parents and siblings preparing for an evening outing when the 4-year-old went into the garage by himself and found the gun.

The child’s parents drove him to the hospital in Haines City. He was then flown to an Orlando hospital in critical condition.

Officers said the parents were cooperating with their investigation. No further information was immediately available.

“This is a heartbreaking incident,” said Davenport Police Chief Steve Parker. “We are praying this child recovers from his injuries, and we equally pray for the family as they work through this
tragedy.”
