TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. () — The third sewage spill of the summer occurred during the heavy storms on Saturday.

An estimated 40,000 gallons of sewage and stormwater mixture spilled into Horsepen Creek, according to a statement from the City of Tybee sent Sunday afternoon. This, after seeing over five inches of rain this weekend, which saturated the ground.

The city said it took immediate control, but despite efforts, manholes from Jones Avenue, 8th Street and other locations spilled.

“Crews worked through the afternoon to stop the spill and then worked into the evening to clean the spills up,” said the city. “Sandbags already on location helped mitigate the spill.”

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GEPD) and the Health Department were notified of the incident, along with other agencies.

The city also said it has taken action after the last spill, including raising manholes by four feet, installing new castings, waterproof sealing manholes, cleaning clogged drains and contracting a third-party company to clean sanitary sewer lines with high-pressure jet vac trucks in 12 different locations.

According to the statements, the City of Tybee has future projects underway to improve the island’s infrastructure and reduce flood risk, including sewer lines rehabilitation and expansion.
