BEAUFORT, S.C. () — A new petition has launched in support of MCAS Beaufort’s former Commanding Officer Mark D. Bortnem.
Bortnem was relieved of duty on Tuesday following a “loss of trust and confidence in his ability to command.” Bortnem was promptly reassigned to duties as directed at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island.
The petition, on change.org, seeks to “influence the perception of the leader’s effectiveness and character within the Marine Corps community.”
“Colonel Mark D. Bortnem’s relief of command at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort marks a significant loss to the local community, both on and off the base. Under his leadership, MCAS Beaufort saw numerous improvements in operations, morale, and community engagement. Colonel Bortnem’s dedication to the well-being of his Marines and their families fostered a strong sense of unity, while his commitment to supporting local initiatives strengthened the ties between the base and surrounding areas,” the petition says.
Petition starter Joan Petrucci urges those who know Bortnem to sign the petition and share a personal story of the positive impressions he left on the community.
“I ask for the support of our community in standing behind Colonel Bortnem, a leader whose impact on all of us cannot be overstated. Whether through his dedication, mentorship, or unwavering commitment to the Marines under his command, Colonel Bortnem has made a lasting impression on countless lives. His leadership has shaped not only the effectiveness of our units but the personal growth of individuals as well. I encourage everyone to share their thoughts and experiences—how he has influenced your career, inspired your growth, or simply made a difference in your day-to-day life. Your comments are important and will show the true depth of his impact, underscoring just how much he means to the Marines who have served under him. Let’s come together to show him the support and respect he has earned,” the petition ended.
