MONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — The Monticello Police Department is highlighting the usefulness of security cameras in catching a burglar over the weekend.

Officials wrote in a news release on Facebook that officers were dispatched to a business on East Washington Street to investigate a theft complaint. Footage from the security cameras showed a man entering the business without permission and stealing a portable speaker.

The suspect was identified as Kevin Taylor. Officials said investigators recognized him due to previous arrests and calls for service.

“The Monticello Police Department would like to remind residents and businesses to make sure their cameras are charged and properly hooked up,” officials wrote. “We were able to quickly close this case because the business’s cameras were working.”

Taylor was later located, arrested and booked into the Piatt County Correctional Center on charges of burglary and theft. He was later released from custody with a notice to appear in court.
