CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A 23-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed two Champaign firefighters and a medical technician Thursday night, causing “serious” injuries.

Champaign Police said in a news release that at approximately 9:40 p.m., a person called 911 and reported they were experiencing mental health concerns at a location near Neil Street and Buena Vista Drive. First responders, including Champaign Fire and Arrow Ambulance, were dispatched to assist and transport the individual to the hospital.

Then at 9:52 p.m., the personnel on scene called out an immediate need for assistance over the radio, indicating an in-progress stabbing at their location. Police officers rushed to the scene and found two Champaign firefighters and a paramedic with serious stab wounds.

A responding medical unit was restraining the subject when officers arrived.

Officials said the responding officers were able to quickly secure the man, identified as 23-year-old Trevor Lewis of Champaign, and safely detain him. Additional medical units on scene rendered medical aid in the field until the injured first responders could be transported to a local hospital.

At this time, the firefighters remain hospitalized in serious, but stable condition. The paramedic has been treated and released from the hospital.

Police added that Lewis found to be bleeding from a laceration on his hand, which caused him to be transported to the hospital for medical treatment as well. He was later arrested on the following initial charges:

  • Three counts of attempted murder
  • Three counts of aggravated battery
  • One count of resisting arrest

Even though an arrest has been made, this investigation into this incident remains ongoing. Champaign Police officers are continuing to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance.

Any resident or business in the nearby area of the crime with exterior surveillance camera systems is urged to notify the Champaign Police Department.

Officials asked that anyone with additional information call the CPD at 217-351-4545, and arrangements can be made for information to be shared privately. Those wishing to stay anonymous can submit tips to Crime Stoppers by calling 217-373-8477, online at 373tips.com or through the P3 Tips app.
