PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — An unsettling afternoon unfolded at Brown University on Saturday when a gunman opened fire, resulting in multiple individuals being shot. As evening approached, detailed information about the incident remained limited.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley announced a briefing scheduled for 6:15 p.m., where he, alongside other officials, aimed to provide more clarity on the situation.

The university’s officials described the situation as “ongoing” as of 5:52 p.m. and strongly advised everyone on campus to “continue to shelter in place,” according to an emergency alert issued during the crisis.

Reports from Target 12 indicated that law enforcement officers were actively searching for suspects, conducting thorough sweeps from building to building by 5:45 p.m.

On the scene, 12 News crews observed the grim aftermath, with clothing and blood visible on the sidewalks. The area around Thayer Street, the bustling heart of Brown’s campus, was heavily populated with police and ambulances. The FBI has become involved, contributing to the ongoing investigation.

The initial alert issued by Brown at 4:22 p.m. urged individuals to stay away from the area near Barus & Holley Engineering, located at 184 Hope St.

At 5:27 p.m., more than an hour after an active shooter was first reported, Brown authorities said they had received a report of shots fired near Governor Street.

After earlier suggesting one suspect had been apprehended, Brown officials reported at 5:11 p.m. that no one was in custody and a search for suspects was continuing.

The initial alert said: “Lock doors, silence phones and stay stay hidden until further notice. Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself. Stay tuned for further safety information.”

Gov. Dan McKee confirmed state officials were monitoring the situation as of 5:31 p.m., writing on social media, “Praying for our community.”
