In Sarasota, Florida, a man and two minors have been apprehended for the unlawful capture and killing of alligators across Manatee, Sarasota, and Hardee Counties, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). This illegal activity began in 2023.
Connor Wiegand, aged 21, along with two juveniles, faced arrest in December 2025 for their involvement in the illegal capture of American Alligators.
The FWC has pressed an array of charges against them, totaling 69 felonies and 23 misdemeanors.
“Thanks to the diligent work and thorough investigations conducted by our officers and investigators, we have successfully halted the unlawful actions of individuals who disregarded Florida’s conservation laws,” stated Major Evan Laskowski, Commander of the Southwest Region. “This case highlights our unwavering dedication to safeguarding Florida’s natural resources for the enjoyment of all.”
In 2024, the FWC received a report from Sarasota County regarding the illegal possession, harassment, and capture of American Alligators.
After investigators worked with the Sarasota County State Attorney’s Office, they uncovered evidence of numerous fish and wildlife violations posted on social media.
FWC said as the investigation developed, it became clear that alligators were illegally taken from Manatee, Sarasota, and Hardee Counties beginning in 2023.
Some of the felony charges include possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, taking of alligators, animal fighting, and aggravated animal cruelty.
Anyone seeing someone violating wildlife is encouraged to report it by calling the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922 or submitting a tip online.
