A recent federal lawsuit alleges that OpenAI’s ChatGPT inadvertently took on the role of a legal advisor, leading a woman to dismiss her human lawyer. This claim has been brought forward by Nippon, a life insurance company.

According to Nippon, they reached a settlement with an Illinois resident, Graciela Dela Torre, regarding a long-term disability claim two years ago. As part of the settlement, Dela Torre signed a comprehensive release and the case was dismissed with prejudice, indicating it could not be reopened. Yet, last year, Dela Torre attempted to challenge the settlement.

After being informed by her lawyer that the settlement was binding, Dela Torre reportedly turned to ChatGPT for assistance. Nippon asserts that the chatbot assisted her in drafting legal documents to contest the settlement, which she submitted pro se, without legal representation. The court, however, rejected her attempt.

Undeterred by the court’s ruling, Dela Torre initiated a new case, submitting numerous filings purportedly crafted with ChatGPT’s guidance. Nippon claims that dealing with this situation has incurred costs close to $300,000.
