Aiken County Coroner investigating death of 39-week-old in utero, mother charged

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. () – The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is investigating a death of a baby who died in utero.

According to the the coroner’s office, they responded to Aiken Regional Medical Centers for the death of a 39-week “intrauterine fetal demise.” Physicians at the medical center pronounced the child deceased at 11 a.m. on Nov. 4, 2024.

The child, who was identified as Kyrie Venable, was autopsied in Newberry. The final manner of death has been determined homicide, due to exposure to methamphetamine.

According to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, the mother is 27-year-old Laquanda Lee, a resident of Graniteville, S.C. She is facing a Murder charge of Homicide by Child Abuse and is currently being held at Aiken County Detention Center without bond.

The coroner’s office, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) are continuing to investigate.
