On Thursday, U.S. airlines began canceling hundreds of flights in response to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) directive aimed at reducing air traffic at the nation’s major airports, effective from Friday, due to the ongoing government shutdown.

According to FlightAware, a platform that monitors flight disruptions, over 790 flights scheduled for Friday have already been removed from airline itineraries. This number is already four times the typical daily cancellations seen on a Thursday and is expected to rise further.
