ORLANDO, Fla. – A flood warning is now in effect along the St. Johns River near the Astor area. Wetter-than-normal conditions are expected for the majority of the work week, increasing the threat for minor flooding from Tuesday to Thursday.

Flood Warning

The Flood Warning impacts parks of Lake and Volusia counties that run along the river.

River Levels – Astor

This area has already seen 2 to 3 inches of rain over the past week, and with more rain in the forecast, the river is on the rise. As of Monday morning, water levels are at 2.2 feet and are expected to crest at 2.3 feet by Tuesday, which meets Minor Flood Stage.

  • Flood Impacts:

    • Rising water will impact canals, docks, and low-lying yards, especially near SR-40.

    • Properties along Bartram Road, Holiday Circle, Wild Hog Road, and Alice Drive may see water entering their yards.

    • Some docks may be submerged, and no-wake zones are in effect to reduce wake damage.

Flooding a regular problem in Astor

For years, News 6 has reported on flooding issues in Astor.

The town sits on the St. Johns River, between Lake and Volusia counties.

Despite being so far inland, storm surge from recent hurricanes has caused the river to rise, flooding streets and even coming up to homes.

Rising sea levels exacerbate the problem.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducted a study to consider flood prevention techniques in the area. Last year, the corps recommended a series of improvements to the Astor area.

Lake County, however, would have to pay for the implementation of any of those recommendations.

The county said its engineers were analyzing those projects to see if they were worth the cost.

We’ve reached out to the Lake County government to get an update on that.
