February marks Heart Month, and on Friday, countless individuals nationwide donned red attire to spotlight the importance of heart disease awareness.
In Savannah, a local sorority took an active role in this initiative by putting on their dancing and exercise shoes.
The Gamma Sigma Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. organized a ‘Pink Goes Red’ hip-hop aerobics session. This event included complimentary blood pressure screenings, thanks to a collaboration with Curtis V. Cooper Primary Healthcare.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women, surpassing even breast cancer in mortality rates.
“Recently, there have been numerous reports in the news and on social media of young individuals experiencing heart attacks and strokes,” explained Tara Scott-Brown, vice president and program chair of the Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter. “It’s crucial for people to realize that heart disease isn’t just a concern for the elderly; it impacts everyone.”
Organizers of the event also urged people to check their blood pressure regularly.
“Know what your blood pressure is, the importance of keeping your blood pressure controlled.
Knowing what that cholesterol numbers, what your LDL’s are. If you’re diabetic, knowing that A1C,” said Carolyn Eiland from Curtis V. Cooper Primary Healthcare.
The Heart Association is also encouraging every household to have at least one member who knows hands-only CPR.
