TOPEKA (KSNT) – Law enforcement say a missing Topeka child has been found safe in another state following a recent AMBER Alert.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) reported a missing local two-year-old was located safe. Law enforcement in Mattoon, Illinois found the child and suspect at 12:25 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22.

The Topeka Police Department (TPD) held a live press conference for the child abduction in the city’s Oakland neighborhood at the intersection of Northeast Chester Avenue and Northeast Division Street.

TPD Chief Chris Vallejo told reporters a new homicide investigation is underway after police found two people dead in a residence around 9:50 a.m. on July 22 in the 500 block of Wabash after they were called to the location for a welfare check. This is in the same area where the child was abducted from.
