CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Energy bills have doubled and even tripled for some families in Illinois. But, Ameren said they’re stepping up to help customers.

They donated $2 million to low-income home energy assistance programs also known as LIHEAP. Customers eligible for this program can receive aid for their energy bills.

The one-time grant is for household’s with a combined gross income at or below the 60% state median income level. Ameren said that the funding is in response to higher electric bills.

The energy giant donated the $2 million directly to the agencies running the LIHEAP programs. These agencies are in Illinois, and they will administer the grants.

“We do know that some of our customers are struggling to pay their bills because of the increase on the electric supply. So, we did want to do what we could to help with credit towards that bill, which is why we decided to donate the $2 million to help with credit towards one of those bills,” Ameren Manager of Energy Assistance, Kim Bond, said.

Qualifying customers can receive $150 toward their energy bill. The funds are available until they run out. Ameren is encouraging people to apply for the $150 credit quickly. The next LIHEAP benefit will not be available until October.
