Apopka Considers 32% Property Tax Increase Before Deadline

APOPKA, Fla. – On Monday evening, city officials in Apopka will convene to discuss a potential 32% hike in the city’s property tax rate. This decision comes shortly after city commissioners could not reach consensus on a definitive rate during a recent meeting.

The proposed increase would raise the millage rate by 0.75, resulting in an additional $6.6 million in revenue for Apopka. Homeowners with properties valued at $300,000 would see their annual taxes rise by approximately $187.

Earlier this month, Commissioner Nadia Anderson was the sole member of the Apopka City Commission to oppose the tax increase. She expressed her intention to address the concerns of constituents at the meeting, welcoming their input even at the last minute.

The majority of the commission, however, has shown support for the budget that would accompany this proposed higher tax rate.

City leaders face a Friday deadline to finalize the millage rate, with a special commission meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. A decisive vote on the budget is slated for September 3.

The decision is also unfolding as Florida voters are months away from deciding on a statewide property tax amendment on the November ballot — one that could significantly affect future tax revenue for cities like Apopka.
