CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — In a significant move to assist the community’s most vulnerable, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is set to open its appointment lines starting February 1 at 7:00 p.m. This initiative targets low-income residents aged 65 and older, or those who are homebound, residing in Chatham County.
Eligible participants must adhere to specific income requirements and provide appropriate verification. Those interested in securing an appointment should dial (912) 721-7910. It is important to note that arrangements cannot be made by contacting the Economic Opportunity Authority (EOA) office directly or by visiting their official website.
Residents should take note of the updated procedures as they prepare to apply for assistance. These changes are crucial for ensuring a smooth and efficient application process.
- Appointments for residents 65 years of age and older or homebound will begin on
January 6, 2026. - Once you call the appointment line, you will be prompted to Press 1 to receive an
appointment. You will be given an appointment date and time. To accept this
appointment date and time, you must Press 1. If you do not want to book the
appointment offered, you must Press 2. The prompt will then let you know that you have
opted not to accept the appointment. Before ending the call, you will be given a final
opportunity to accept or decline the appointment by pressing 1 before the call ends. - In order to receive a different appointment, you must hang up and call the appointment
line again. - To qualify, a family’s annual income must be in accordance with the Fiscal Year 2026 LIHEAP Eligibility Guidelines.
- Documents needed by applicants who qualify are as follows:
- Current Heating Bill (must provide both electric and gas bill unless the home is totally electric).
- Social Security Card for each member of the household.
- Picture ID (i.e., Driver’s License, State Photo ID, even if the ID is expired etc.)
- Proof of Income for the last 30 days for each adult member of the household.
- Proof of income can include but is not limited to the following: 2026 Social Security Award
- Letter, a paycheck stub, a letter granting public assistance, unemployment benefits for all applicable members of the household.
- All applicants will be required to come into the EOA Cuyler Building (located at 618 West Anderson Street, Savannah, Ga.) for their appointments with the appropriate documents
