Argenta Mayor asks for help in ending dangerous trends involving youth

ARGENTA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Village of Argenta is asking people to help bring an end to two situations that the mayor described as being potentially dangerous.

In a letter on Facebook, Mayor Cindy Luedke said the situations both involve young people engaging in disruptive behavior. The first involves “a group of boys” being out late at night and early in the morning, banging on the doors and sides of houses.

“The police are aware of this issue but catching them has proven to be difficult,” Luedke said. “At this time, we have not been able to identify them, but I am confident that eventually they will be caught.”

If this happens to someone’s house, homeowners are asked to contact the Macon County Sheriff’s Office by calling the nonemergency number 217-424-1311, or 911 if they feel it is an emergency. People should also contact Village Hall at 217-795-4529 so staff can add to a list of incidents.

“If anyone knows who these boys are or can positively identify them, please let us know,” Luedke said. “This problem is getting out of hand, and we need your help to get it resolved.”

The second issue Luedke referenced is young people riding vehicles in unauthorized places and ignoring the rules of the road. This includes non-street legal scooters and bikes being ridden on the roads, young people driving golf carts without a driver’s license, people disobeying stop signs and people going too fast.

Luedke said it’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

“This, too, needs to stop and can be controlled by the parents,” Luedke said. “We need your help to get these problems under control before something happens that we will all regret. The last thing any of us wants is for someone to get hurt, so let’s work together to resolve these issues.”
