AUGUSTA, Ga ()- Friday night, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office partnered with several law enforcement agencies to conduct safety checkpoints.
They resulted in 22 arrests- 20 DUI’s, 1 outstanding warrant and 1 for felony drug charges.
Officers also issue citations for seatbelt violations, child safety violations, suspended licenses and tags, and uninsured motorists.
In response to concerns about the constitutionality of these road checks, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety said “Road checks such as these are legal as determined by the U.S. Supreme Court in Michigan v. Sitz (1990) and reaffirmed by the Georgia Supreme Court for Georgia’s roadways. While you may never know how many lives are saved through checkpoints, studies by the CDC and other meta-analyses have shown that these efforts reduce alcohol-related crashes and encourage responsible decision-making.”
