CARROLLWOOD, Fla. (WFLA) — An 18-year-old is facing murder charges in connection with a deadly shooting that took place on a basketball court in Carrollwood.
Deputies said Anthony Cabrera Morales, 18, opened fire during a pickup basketball game on Tuesday night at Plantation Park, killing Brian Jones, 19, and injuring another teen.
On Thursday, Morales appeared before a judge dressed in a green vest.
“Cabrera Morales, the state has filed a motion for pre-trial detention against you, for two life felonies categorized as dangerous crimes,” said Hillsborough County Judge Logan Murphy.
Newly released court documents show Morales got into an argument at the court and then opened fire at the two victims. According to witnesses in the document, Morales shot the teens from 20 to 30 feet away.
One of the victims was running away when he was shot. Neither of the two victims were armed.
News Channel 8 On Your Side spoke to the Jones’ sister who shared photos of her brother. His sister said he was a young father and was full of life.
Due to the serious nature of the crime, Morales will remain behind bars as of Thursday.
“You will be held on no bond on those charges until we hear from the states motion,” Judge Murphy said.
Morales faces second degree murder, and attempted murder, both life felony charges. Prosecutors are pushing to keep him in jail without bond.
