New year, new normal: Ashley Wasielewski faces recovery

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Just before Christmas, Ashley Wasielewski faced her third surgical procedure, as shared by her family, casting a shadow over the holiday season. As they step into the new year, they anticipate adapting to a “new normal.”

It has been 22 days since the harrowing acid attack occurred near Forsyth Park. Authorities report that a man doused Wasielewski with a corrosive substance, resulting in third-degree burns covering more than half of her body. Having undergone several surgeries at the Augusta Burn Center, she has now been released to continue her recovery in the Augusta region.

Her son, Westley Wasielewski, expressed that the family is still seeking answers.

“The situation has been incredibly frustrating. It’s been a time of growth,” Westley remarked. “My mom will likely feel the need to watch her back unless the perpetrator is apprehended. This incident has altered my relationship with the city, a place we cherish and love to spend time in.”

Westley mentioned that the third surgery involved skin grafting, and more surgeries, as well as regular medical checkups, are expected in the near future.

“I think the physical and mental side of it for her is probably the hardest,” he said. “Coming to terms that she may never have a full head of hair. She’s now been kind of painted as this victim and that’s something she never really asked for. I don’t think anyone wakes up and thinks their life is going to head in this direction.”

Westley hopes his mother’s story will inspire change in Savannah, from increased safety measures to more community support.

“Hopefully we can make some positive changes, whether that be just showing up for other people, or any type of security initiative, or some more lights, or possible video cameras around some of the parks in Savannah,” he said.

He added that the family’s focus for the new year is simple: maintaining hope and strength.

“I don’t think this guy knew who he was messing with,” Westley said.

He continued, “We would obviously love some answers and get some justice. But we’re not holding our breath on that one. So just focusing on her and making sure that she’s going to be strong and can face whatever future and eventuality may come her way.”

The family also thanked city officials, law enforcement and the community for their support, from GoFundMe donations to businesses offering cash rewards for information.

The FBI and Savannah Police are seeking doorbell or security camera footage from any residences near Forsyth Park.
