ATLANTA () — As Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport gears up for one of its busiest travel stretches of the year, it anticipates handling more than 4 million passengers from last Thursday to the upcoming Tuesday, reinforcing its title as the world’s busiest airport.

Airport representatives predict that the peak travel days will be this Sunday and the following Monday, each expected to see close to 400,000 people passing through the airport’s terminals.

In an effort to alleviate congestion, airport authorities are strongly advising travelers to arrive at least three hours ahead of their flights to allow sufficient time for parking, check-in, and going through security. Additionally, they have installed 18 new monitors displaying real-time security wait times before checkpoints, enabling passengers to better plan their journey.

Some travelers, anticipating potential delays, have already started incorporating extra time into their schedules.

Molly Good, traveling from Atlanta to Washington, D.C., shared that her return trip has encountered an unexpected hitch.

“We came in for the weekend to visit our daughter at the University of Georgia. Everything was fine flying in, but today we got a notification saying we’re delayed three hours going home. So we’re going to have to wait in the airport and find something to eat,” she said.

The Federal Aviation Administration expects this to be the busiest Thanksgiving travel period in 15 years, with more than 360,000 flights nationwide over the holiday stretch.
