AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Augusta Locally Grown started in 2008 and has developed from a largely volunteer pre-order farmers market to a blooming sustainable food source for many in the CSRA.
While the search for a new Executive Director is ongoing, Amy Christian, a board member with Augusta Locally Grown, says they are focusing on maintaining its momentum.
“There are a lot of moving parts in this organization, and we need a new executive director who can kind of take all those moving parts and kind of see a vision to keep the organization growing and helping as many people as we can.”
The organization has grown tremendously in the last 17 years especially now that their location is in The Hub.
It held its first farmers market of the season last week and Christian says they are looking forward to the spring season and what it has to bring.
“Working in a non-profit is tough work. the good thing about non-profits is they build camaraderie within the employee group really quickly and we have a great group of employees who have really stepped up, so with a lot of help from the board and a lot of help from our partners, we are doing really well.” said Christian.
Along with farmers markets throughout the area and online, the organization holds wellness programs, cooking classes and now a teaching farm in south Augusta.
Christian says they want to connect local farmers to local families.
“We like to get as many people into our farmers markets as we can, and then it doesn’t do any good to give people fresh, healthy food if they don’t know what to do with those products, so we have cooking classes, and gardening classes.” Christian said.
While it is still looking for a new Executive Director, classes, programs and the farmers market will continue as normal.
