AUGUSTA, Ga. () – On June 22nd, around 1:45 am, multiple RCSO deputies and investigators were on Broad Street working the area, when they heard several gunshots coming from the 900 block of Ellis Street.

Upon officers’ arrival they located a man with gunshot wounds and administered aid until an ambulance arrived. The individual was transported to WellStar Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.

Officers found several people trying to leave the area, and they were detained and multiple firearms were recovered. Authorities say numerous bullet shell casings were found in the area and multiple vehicles in the area were hit as a result of the shooting.

After several interviews by investigators and evidence collected form the scene, charges were made against 20-year-old Demari Gaines, who was shot at least once during the incident.

Gaines is currently at WellStar Hospital in stable condition.

The investigation showed that he was involved in the shooting and is being charged with:

• 2 counts of Aggravated Assault
• 1 count of Criminal Damage to Property in the First Degree
• 1 count of Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime

RCSO says the investigation is still ongoing, and interviews re still being conducted.
