AUGUSTA, Ga. () — A fashion show with a message is coming to Augusta. Reflection of Black Excellence is set for February 22 at 6 p.m. at 1250 Reynolds Street, showcasing bold designs inspired by African culture and history.

Melanie Caballero, the designer behind the event, has been in fashion since she was 22. Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Puerto Rico, she’s been sewing since she was six. “I think since the beginning of the time people have needed to wear clothing. So, what not made [them] beautiful, comfortable, and stylish,” she said.

Her latest collection, African Queen, isn’t just about style—it’s about strength. She says this year’s show is not only a tribute to Black History Month but also a response to the political climate. ” It’s one way to provide for local models and my signature models to wear something strong kind in a fashion way,” she added.

Models Larissa Melville and Harriet Gilliam say wearing Melanie’s designs makes them feel confident and powerful. The pieces incorporate traditional African fabrics, intricate beadwork, and bold silhouettes. “I remember the first time, I did a fashion show, and I saw her outfits and I was like, ‘Mom, I have to walk for her clothes. Because like, I was just like, I was just like so shocked by her clothes,” Larissa shared. ” I feel very connected whenever I wear her clothes, it’s like, it’s beautiful,” Harriet added.

The show will feature more than 50 models, a mix of Melanie’s signature talent and local faces getting their start. “Not everybody can afford New York or places too far. We are just in the backyard,” Melanie.

Tickets for Reflection of Black Excellence are on sale now.
