OSSABOW ISLAND, Ga. () — A day after a 71-year-old man was reported missing off of Ossabaw Island, officials found a body matching his description, the U.S. Coast Guard announced Wednesday.
The man was reported missing on Tuesday a few miles off of Ossabaw Island. His 42 ft. sailboat was located, and an Air Station Savannah rescue swimmer was lowered to the vessel but found no one aboard.
Officials reportedly searched more than 233 square miles before suspending the search.
Wednesday, a Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) patrol located a body matching the man’s description on the southern portion of Ossabaw Island, a USCG Southeast spokesperson said.
The body has since been taken to the Chatham County Coroner’s Office.
“We extend our deepest condolences,” said Lt. Michael Allen, a Sector Charleston search and rescue mission coordinator. “Suspending a search is never easy and is only done after all efforts and leads are exhausted.”
