SYLVANIA, Ga. () – We’re learning more details about an incident where two people were killed after a boat overturned in a pond in Screven County.

The Screven County Sheriff’s Office says this all happened around lunchtime Wednesday.

Three young adults were enjoying an afternoon fishing on a pond, but a tragic accident has now left two dead.

Investigators were called to a pond off of Poor Robin Road close to 12:45 Wednesday.

They say one of the young adults was able to get out of the water safely, and was sent home after getting treatment from EMS.

But his two friends tragically lost their lives from drowning.

Sheriff Norman Royal has only been in office for just over two weeks, after he won election over the incumbent Sheriff Mike Kile back in November.

“It’s a tragic loss for our community. These young boys were great football stars here in Screven County. Well known, well liked. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time,” said Royal.

The victims are identified as 22-year-old Eli Brodnex, and Demetrius Boyd—who just turned 23 last month.

Investigators say the accident happened when 21-year-old Timothy Ward got out of the boat while Boyd and Brodnex were still fishing.

“From our understanding, the two gentlemen were able to hook fish, jerk back in the boat to set the hook, and the boat overturned backwards,” said Royal.

Multiple law enforcement agencies then came to help the Sheriff’s Office to find Boyd and Brodnex.

Screven County EMS, Screven County Fire, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Effingham County Fire, Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office, Screven County Marine Rescue Squadron, and several local scuba divers all came to Poor Robin Road for assistance.

With the warmer months coming soon, the top cop says it’s important to have the proper equipment whenever you get on the water.

“Life jackets, life jackets, life jackets. It saves lives. Learn to swim, always be prepared, have your life jacket, and wear your life jacket. Make sure it fits, and make sure it’s secure,” Royal said.

Sheriff Royal says they’re still investigating the circumstances leading to these deaths, but they do not suspect foul play.
