UPDATE, 11:35 am – The RCSO held a news conference Thursday morning to provide more details on the officer involved shooting.

The information shared to the media, was partial and developing.

NewsChannel 6 has learned that Dalyn Elder, the suspect accused of shooting Deputy Victor Rodriguez, was NOT the robbery suspect.

Law enforcement says they pursued Elder because he matched the description of the armed robbery suspect.

Deputy Rodriguez spotted Elder running near the I-20 overpass toward the Waffle House.

Dayln Elder, 20

Law enforcement said that they believe Elder shot at deputies because he was wanted for 11 warrants including aggravated assault for an incident that happened on Central Avenue in Augusta in May of this year.

Deputy Rodriguez was grazed once and struck twice in the left lower torso but continued relaying information and returned fire. He was shot below his bullet resistant vest.

He is stable and expected to make a full recovery.

Elder was also shot during this morning’s incident.

After he allegedly shot the deputy, witnesses saw him take off on foot.

Corporal Amanda Donald and Deputy John Wade pursued Elder through the parking lot of Outback Steak House.

Police say he attempted to reach a vehicle for pickup while still armed, aimed his weapon at deputies – Corporal Donald fired, striking Elder at least once in the chest.

He transported to WellStar MCG in critical condition.

The gun Elder had was reportedly stolen.

Elder is charged with:

  • 3 counts Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Possession of a Firearm During Commission of a Felony
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
  • Theft by Receiving Stolen Property (Felony)
