KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — The City of Kingsport announced Wednesday its Main Street Rebuild project received an award for “Excellence in Economic and Community Development.”
The award will be presented to the city at the 85th Annual Conference of the Tennessee Municipal League (TML) in Chattanooga on Aug. 5, according to a news release.

The $20 million project consisted of a plan to replace water, sewer and stormwater systems, place overhead utilities underground and stabilize failing road foundations.
Enhancements to make downtown “more inviting and accessible” for the community were also implemented in the plan.
“By updating the roadway, utilities, and streetscaping in one comprehensive project, the city improved efficiency of the project, saved taxpayer funds, and enhanced the delivery and reliability of vital utility services to the Main Street community,” the city said in the news release. “The utility modernization also prevents expensive emergency repairs and minimizes the need for future maintenance.”
