DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — March is known as the season of college basketball and one junior college tournament in Vermilion County kicked off on Monday morning.
All week long, visitors can see some of the best junior college teams in the nation at the Danville Area Community College. It’s the school’s 32nd year hosting the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II men’s basketball championship.
Twenty teams are in this year’s bracket. Organizers said it’s very similar to a Division I tournament. Teams come from different states like Florida, Missouri and Iowa, all focusing on accomplishing one thing: winning the title.
“Of course, the numbers aren’t as large, but I would say pretty much, it’s the same type of atmosphere. It’s the same intensity of the players who are seeking the same goals as the NCAA,” organizer Jeanie Cooke said.
The tournament also has different rules. Each team will be get to play two games and they’ll have a consolation bracket. This will help determine the third and fourth place winners.
The championship game is Saturday. All week long you can watch several games a day starting early in the morning and running until night.
