BEAUFORT, S.C. () — Expectant moms and families were treated to a community baby shower today at the Beaufort Seventh-day Adventist Church. The event was held to ease some of the financial burden on new and expectant mothers. Participants received free infant clothing, diapers, wipes and other essential supplies. Raffle giveaways included a crib, car seat, stroller and Pack N Play.

Healthcare providers and local organizations were on hand to share important information about care options and community resources available to families with newborns. Beaufort-Jasper-Hampton Comprehensive Health Services clinical professionals offered free medical screenings including blood pressure, blood glucose and HIV in addition to dental screenings.

According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Beaufort has shown a gradual increase infant mortality rates since 2016. The rate is currently above the state average. While not always preventable, studies show health education about pregnancy and infant care, like those available at the shower, can greatly reduce risks.

Molina Healthcare of South Carolina, Healing Hurts Ministries, Beaufort Seventh-day Adventist Church and Beaufort-Jasper-Hampton Comprehensive Health Services put today’s event on.
