SAVANNAH, Ga. — In a thrilling display of athletic prowess, Benedictine secured its place in the state tournament for the sixth consecutive year, thanks to a triumphant first-round performance in the Region 1-AAAA competition. The excitement didn’t end there, as several other teams also clinched victories on Monday.

Meanwhile, over in Wayne County, the Yellowjackets delivered a commanding performance, defeating Perry with a decisive 61-41 scoreline in their opening match. This victory was a testament to their strategic execution on the court.

Reflecting on his team’s success, Head Coach Jamey Knight attributed the win to meticulous adherence to their game plan. “We’re minimizing turnovers, which is really working in our favor,” Knight explained. “Our shooting is on point, we’re dominating the rebounds, and our defensive play has improved. The goal is to maintain this momentum,” he added.

In another noteworthy match at Wayne County, the Benedictine boys’ basketball team, seeded fifth in the Region 1-AAAA tournament, pulled off an impressive upset against the fourth-seeded New Hampstead, emerging victorious with a 46-36 score. This unexpected outcome further underscores the competitive spirit and determination of the team.

Also at Wayne County, the No. 5 seed in the Region 1-AAAA tournament, Benedictine boys’ basketball, upset the No. 4 seed, New Hampstead, 46-36.

In Region 3-AAA, the opening round games did not produce any upsets.

On the girls’ side, Calvary Day defeated Southeast Bulloch, 50-18. Calvary Day will take on the top seed from sub-region A, Liberty County, on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Long County.

The Windsor Forest girls also keep their season alive. They took care of business against Islands, 52-17. The Lady Knights will play the top seed from sub-region B, Jenkins, on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Calvary Day.

On the boys’ side, Groves defeated Johnson, 59-51. Johnson had several chances late, but could not get a shot to drop late in the fourth quarter.

“Like I told the guys, ‘It’s been a tough year,’” Groves head coach Kevin Evans said. We are 0-0. It’s one win at a time. The regular season doesn’t matter at this point. The record doesn’t matter at this point. It’s about what you do in each remaining game. It’s going to be a tough test tomorrow against Calvary [Day], but we are going to be ready to play.”

The game between Groves and Calvary Day will take place on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Calvary Day.

In the other boys’ game, Islands punched its ticket to the quarterfinal round. The Sharks defeated Southeast Bulloch, 62-46. Islands travels to Long County on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a spot in the state tournament.
