The Urbana Police Department has issued a warning to the community regarding a surge in scam attempts where individuals are deceitfully informed they have outstanding arrest warrants.
In a Facebook update shared on Friday, officials from the Urbana Police Department revealed that these scammers are contacting individuals with claims that they are either subject to an arrest warrant or entangled in legal troubles. The fraudsters often attempt to extract sensitive financial details, such as bank account numbers or credit card information, and may also urge victims to purchase pre-paid debit or gift cards.
Authorities highlighted that the scammers frequently employ aggressive and menacing language to instill a sense of urgency. In some instances, they may even impersonate relatives to exploit the trust of their targets.
