A legacy of giving: Bluffton Community Kitchen feeds thousands

Bluffton, S.C. () – What started in 2011 with one woman delivering 500 meals a year, has turned into something much bigger.

Now two generations later, her family has continued to carry on her legacy by serving over 40,000 meals a year across the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire.

Hunger affects more people than many realize, and that’s why the Bluffton Community Kitchen is dedicated to helping those folks who may be struggling. Whether it’s serving up hot meals, or offering free groceries through their outdoor pantry, they’re focused on giving back to those who need it most.

For program director, Candyce Valmont, it’s all about continuing her grandmother’s work.

“It’s truly surreal to be able to continue the legacy,” Valmont shared. “A lot of people here still remember Ida, and that is their connection to this place. It’s really special to see her spirit live on through what we do.”

Ida Martin started delivering hot meals from her garage back in 1986. In 2011, she officially founded the Bluffton Community Kitchen. Now, nearly 40 years later, her daughter, granddaughter, and a group of dedicated volunteers continue her vision, providing meals and a sense of community to anyone in need.

“To be able to have the community kitchen here for a hot meal and for community engagement and being able to chat with other community members and not feel alone and be able to be checked up on is really important,” Candyce said.

But the kitchen doesn’t stop at meals. Next week, in partnership with United Way of the Lowcountry, they’ll be hosting a “Showers of Dignity” event.

“It’s a mobile shower bus that they will take around Beaufort County and some of Jasper County and provide hot showers to those in need,” said Valmont. “In addition to that, they will wash their clothes that they come in with, and then also give them a backpack full of survival items, especially for our community members who are homeless.”

That will take place on Thursday, January 23.

The Bluffton Community Kitchen serves hot meals every Monday and Wednesday at 1 p.m. They also provide free groceries through their outdoor pantry every Thursday starting at noon.
