SULLIVAN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Moultrie County Board member accused of possessing child pornography has resigned from all of his positions.

Michael McDaniel, the Chair of Moultrie County Republicans, informed WCIA that Scott Buxton tendered his resignation at Thursday night’s board meeting. Joe Wallace, the former Mayor of Dalton City, has been elected to replace him.

Buxton, 58, was one of two people who was arrested last month following a State Police investigation into “suspicious internet activity.” That investigation, officials said, uncovered multiple images of child pornography and communication between Buxton and the other man — Tyler Scott — that included requests and exchange of child pornography.

Buxton turned himself in after an arrest warrant was issued and he was denied pretrial release. Despite his arrest, arraignment and continued detention, Buxton remained on the Moultrie County Board because the board could not expel him and because he was still not convicted of an “infamous crime” yet.

His resignation resolves any concerns about him remaining on the board as his case proceeds in court.

Buxton is due back in court for a pretrial hearing on July 18.

Tyler Scott, meanwhile, also pleaded not guilty and requested a trial by jury. Court records show that since his arraignment, Scott hired his own counsel and the judge overseeing the case was substituted for a different judge. Scott is due back in court the same day as Buxton.
