Friday brought a gloomy mix of clouds, rain, and chilly temperatures across the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry, setting the stage for a wet weekend.

Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport recorded 1.28 inches of rain, but many inland areas experienced even heavier downpours. According to VIPIR Radar, several communities saw rainfall totals exceeding 1.5 inches over the past 24 hours.

Tattnall County bore the brunt of the weather, with radar estimates indicating over 2.5 inches of rain fell just south of Glennville.

The rain is expected to persist into Friday night and the weekend. Overnight, showers and a few thunderstorms will continue, although most of the precipitation will remain light to moderate. Temperatures will stay on the cooler side, dipping into the lower to mid-40s.

Showers and a few storms will continue overnight. Most of the rain will be light to moderate. Conditions will remain chilly with low temperatures cooling into the lower to middle 40s.

Rain chances will be elevated due to an area of low pressure and a very slow-moving frontal boundary moving through the southeastern U.S. Moisture from the Gulf will continue to flow into the region as long as those features are in place.

Saturday morning will start out with a few passing showers. That will be the trend until the latter morning hours.

Steady rain and pockets of heavy rain will begin to become more widespread by lunchtime. Even more heavy rain is expected to develop in the later afternoon and will continue into the evening.

Localized flooding may occur in areas with poor drainage. An additional 1-2″ of rain is possible on Saturday. A few locations may receive higher amounts.

High temperatures Saturday afternoon will only warm into the lower to middle 50s for most of the region.

Sunday morning will have a chilly start with temperatures in the lower to middle 50s. A few showers are possible through the morning. Rain chances will be higher for the afternoon and evening as another plume of moisture moves over the region.

While the rain chances will be higher Sunday afternoon compared to the morning, rain will not be as widespread or as heavy as what is expected on Saturday.

We will finally begin to break out of the cloudy and wet pattern on Monday as another cold front moves through the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry.

A few isolated showers are possible Monday afternoon. Afternoon high temperatures will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s.

High pressure will build in after the cold front moves off of the coast and will allow much colder and drier air to filter in for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Both days will start out with temperatures near freezing for much of the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry.

Afternoon high temperatures will be able to warm into the mid to upper 50s, even with a partly sunny sky.

Temperatures later in the week will be much warmer than in the middle of the week. High temperature by Thursday and Friday will warm into the mid to upper 60s which is closer to normal for mid-December.
