Weather Aware: Weekend snow possible, dangerously cold on Sunday

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Brace yourself for a continuation of the chill over the coming days, as there’s a chance of wintry conditions this weekend.

Wednesday kicked off with yet another frosty morning for most regions, sparing only the coastal areas. Though today’s high temperatures remained below the seasonal norm, they did offer a slight respite by climbing into the mid to upper 50s, a touch warmer than earlier in the week.

As we transition into Thursday, expect a similar weather pattern with morning temperatures plunging well below freezing. The afternoon promises highs in the mid to upper 50s with a blend of sunshine and clouds.

Friday marks the beginning of a shift as a storm system approaches the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry areas.

WEEKEND SNOW CHANCES

The day is set to remain mostly dry and brisk, with temperatures lingering in the 50s. However, a few isolated showers may emerge later in the evening.

Colder air begins to move in overnight Friday into Saturday as a coastal low will begin to form off the Southeast coast.

A storm system currently moving from the Pacific Ocean into California will couple with another upper-level disturbance moving south from the Arctic and bring wintry weather to the region.

The exact details regarding snowfall amounts and timing for specific areas are still a day or two away, but it is looking more favorable for at least some snowfall in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry.

Rain showers early in the day Saturday will transition to all-snow by the middle of the day as temperatures begin to drop. Other than the brief opportunity for sleet, there are no major concerns for freezing rain and ice.

Areas along and especially north of Interstate 16 will see higher chances for meaningful snowfall, while areas along the Altamaha River have slim chances at best.

Heavier snow is looking more favorable for areas to our north, including the Midlands and Pee Dee of South Carolina, stretching through North Carolina and Southern Virginia.

After the system pulls away, gusty northwesterly winds usher in very cold air. Sunday morning will have lows in the teens, feeling like single-digits, and the potential for wind chills in some inland communities below zero. Sunday as a whole will be cold with highs only in the 30s.

Temperatures slowly moderate next week, but we will still be dealing with below-normal cold for at least the next seven days. Shower chances return later in the week.
