Breaking News: Edgar Co. Firefighters Swiftly Tackle Early Morning Blaze—What You Need to Know

DENNISON, Ill. (WCIA) — Early Friday morning, several fire departments from Edgar County were called to tackle a house fire.

According to Paris Fire Chief Zack Janis in a Facebook update, the incident occurred around 4 a.m. when crews from the City of Paris Fire Department, Paris Community Fire Protection District, and Horizon Health Ambulance were alerted to a structure fire on the 1900 block of Berry Street. This location is in Dennison, Edgar County, situated southeast of Paris, near the crossroads of E County Road 200 N and Berry Street.

Meanwhile, authorities continue to investigate a recent fire at a church in Champaign, with one suspect already in custody.

Initial reports suggest the blaze started in the furnace room, and fortunately, everyone inside managed to exit safely.

Chief Janis reported that upon reaching the scene, he encountered Deputy Neil from the Edgar County Sheriff’s Department, who had already used a second ABC fire extinguisher. The homeowner had operated the first extinguisher before the deputy arrived.

Paris Fire, Vermilion and Oliver firefighters arrived shortly after. Engine 1 deployed an inch-and-three-quarter handline. Firefighters made entry into the rear of the structure and fully extinguished the remaining fire. Overhaul operations were conducted, and ventilation was established to clear the structure.

Chief Janis said damage appears to have been contained primarily to the laundry room area. However, the residence sustained smoke damage throughout and minor water damage in the affected area.

Fire crews then utilized a thermal imaging camera to confirm the fire was completely extinguished.

“The quick response and strong training of all personnel involved and the use of Portable Fire Extinguishers, prevented a more serious loss and ultimately saved another home in our community,” Chief Janis said in his Facebook post. “Excellent work by all first responders, especially on this cold morning following the Thanksgiving holiday.”
