CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — As 2026 dawns, the Illinois football team is facing a wave of changes with several players opting to leave the roster.
On Thursday, junior kicker David Olano made headlines by announcing his decision to enter the transfer portal, marking the beginning of a series of player exits.
Joining Olano in seeking new opportunities is senior tight end Cole Rusk, who shared his intentions on social media. In a heartfelt message, Rusk expressed his gratitude to the Illini fans, stating, “Every chance I stepped on the field I tried to make the most of my opportunity. Thanks for making a dream come true!”
Rusk had an impactful 2025 season, amassing 19 catches for 217 yards and scoring one touchdown, a notable comeback after missing the 2024 season due to injury. His journey in collegiate football began at Murray State before he made his mark at Illinois.

Illinois will also see a player on the defensive side of the ball explore options outside of Champaign, defensive back Kaleb Patterson will enter the transfer portal. Patterson confirmed the news on Instagram.
Patterson spent three years at Illinois after coming to Champaign from Pearl River Community College. He played in 10 games for the Illini in 2025, starting three times in the regular season. He had two fumble recoveries on the year.
