URBANA, Ill. – An arrest has been made by the University of Illinois Police Department in connection with a recent shooting in Campustown that occurred over the weekend.
According to a news release from the UIPD, an 18-year-old Urbana resident was taken into custody for his alleged involvement in the shooting that took place on October 18. Police were alerted to the incident at approximately 12:28 a.m. when gunfire was reported near Fifth and Green Streets. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim suffering from gunshot injuries. The victim required surgery due to the severity of his injuries but is expected to survive.
Investigations revealed that the shooting stemmed from a verbal dispute among several individuals. It was confirmed that the victim does not have any affiliations with the university.
“Following the incident at Fifth and Green Streets in Champaign, our officers and detectives swiftly gathered crucial suspect information by interviewing witnesses and analyzing video footage provided by local residents,” UIPD officials stated. “The Illinois State Police played a vital role in collecting evidence from the scene.”
