SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Just one day after receiving the Outstanding Georgia Citizenship Award, Super Bowl champ Nolan Smith Jr. has had another honor bestowed on him: the renaming of a Savannah bridge.
State Representative Carl Gilliard hosted the renaming ceremony Monday at the Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club. The bridge will now be known as the “Nolan S. Smith, Jr. Bridge.”
During Monday’s presentation, Gilliard said, “Young people need to see this bridge and know that they can be a Nolan, and they can be greater. Young people need to see this bridge and know that there’s a bridge of hope in the despair of what’s going on around us. We are proud of our community. When they come to this bridge, they need to know that there is hope across the other side.”
Calvary Day School coach Michael Carswell knew Smith when he attended the school. He says Smith is very deserving of this honor. “I think what Nolan adds is he gives back all the time. He loves others and he wants the best for others. And then his dedication to that, his resilience, his relentlessness to pursue excellence in all he does. It’s not about the athletics, it’s about others and doing the right thing.”
The Nolan S. Smith, Jr. bridge is located across the Harley Davidson on SR-204 and I-95 and will continue to honor the young Savannah man who now flies with the Eagles.
