CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — A passionate group of Illinois football enthusiasts is rallying to revert the name change of their iconic stadium, just a month after its historic moniker was altered. The beloved home ground of the Fighting Illini, known for a century as Memorial Stadium, recently underwent a name change to Gies Memorial Stadium.

This change was made to honor a substantial financial gift from alumnus Larry Gies, who generously contributed the largest single donation in the history of Illinois Athletics. The renaming also serves as a tribute to Larry Gies Sr., the late father of the benefactor.

During a press conference, Josh Whitman, the Director of Athletics, elaborated on the decision, emphasizing the intent to honor Gies’ significant contribution. Whitman assured that the essence of “Memorial Stadium” in the name was considered “untouchable,” a sentiment shared by Gies himself. As a result, a middle ground was reached, integrating Gies’ name while preserving the historical reference.

The community’s reaction to this change has been mixed. While some fans have embraced the new name, others express nostalgia and a desire to retain the original name unchanged. In response to these sentiments, a faction of the fan base has initiated a petition to restore the stadium’s former title.
