In a twist of fate in Abingdon, Virginia, law enforcement is dealing with an unusual case involving a string of stolen vehicles. According to a report by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), a Bristol man now faces charges after being linked to an operation in which ten cars vanished and were subsequently sold.
The saga began to unravel when, on June 26 and 29, a bewildered property owner on Rich Valley Road reported the sudden disappearance of ten vehicles from his premises.
With a keen investigative eye, the WCSO embarked on a three-week inquiry. Their search culminated in identifying Charles Alexander, a 27-year-old from Bristol, as the prime suspect. Authorities allege Alexander orchestrated the sale of these purloined vehicles by reaching out to local towing companies through Facebook Messenger.
The WCSO said Alexander falsely claimed to have inherited the Rich Valley Road property and was aiming to sell the vehicles as junk. He reportedly told the towing companies he did not have titles for the vehicles. The towing companies agreed to purchase the vehicles and paid Alexander in person on the Rich Valley Road property on three separate occasions, the WCSO said.
Detectives with the WCSO located Alexander as he was attempting to sell additional vehicles. He was arrested on Thursday and charged with the following, according to the release:
- 10 counts of Grand Larceny of a Motor Vehicle
Alexander is being held on a $5,000 bond in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail.
