CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Esteemed actor Jonathan Butler-DuPlessis is returning to his roots this weekend, contributing to the local educational scene in Champaign before receiving recognition from the CU Schools Foundation as a Distinguished Alumni on Friday night.

Butler-DuPlessis, who completed his high school education at Central High School in 2004, pursued theater more intently during his college years at the University of Illinois. With a rich background in both the Chicago and New York City theater circuits, he maintains a strong connection to his beginnings in Central Illinois.

“Being back here feels surreal. This is where I first ventured into group theater beyond the church,” he reminisced while revisiting the halls of Franklin STEAM Academy after many years.

In 2023, Butler-DuPlessis achieved a significant milestone by making his Broadway debut in the acclaimed musical Hamilton. While primarily part of the ensemble, he also serves as an understudy for major characters such as George Washington, Aaron Burr, and Hercules Mulligan, showcasing his versatility.
